First Med Urgent Care History

First Med Urgent Care (formerly Family Choice Clinic and Med Plus) was founded in late1984 by a medical group from Texas. The first clinic was established in Midwest City in 1984. In the spring of 1985, two additional locations were opened on South Walker and N.W. 39th Expressway. Negotiations with Presbyterian Hospital began in March 1986 and culminated in the purchase of all the clinics. In 1993 Med Plus merged with Industrial Health Medicine Services (a clinic in the Presbyterian system) establishing a greater presence in occupational Medicine. In May 1994, a north Oklahoma City location opened at Broadway Extension and Memorial Road.

In December 1999 HCA/Columbia Presbyterian sold the clinics to FamMed, L.L.C., which was jointly owned by Oklahoma Medical Holding Ltd., and The Schuster Group.

At that time, the clinic name was changed from Med Plus to Family Choice. Management services were provided by Integrated Medical Delivery until the sale of the clinics to Dr. Bill Edwards in May 2001. Advance Physicians Group has provided physician and physician assistant staffing for the clinics since they opened in 1984. In 2002, the clinic name was changed from Family Choice to First Med and has been marketed as such since that time.

In July 2003, our Broadway Extension and Memorial Road location was relocated to its current location at North Pennsylvania and Memorial Road, giving the clinic more visibility. In May 2004, another First Med Clinic opened in Northwest Edmond at the intersection of Kelly and Covell Road.

Dr. Edwards, owner and medical director of First Med, is a native Oklahoman and has worked in the clinics since 1985. He practices full-time at the North Pennsylvania and Memorial location.

Sherry Nofziger, First Med’s Practice Administrator, has been with the organization since 2001 and offices at the Kelly and Covell location.
